GOAL STATEMENT
Through my career in the Singapore Armed Forces, I have developed a very keen interest in formulating methods of learning to enhance the soldiers’ ability to learn and train well in the Army. I have understand the importance of a robust training system to guide the instructors in the delivery of instructions and conduct of progressive trainings for the soldiers. In order to effect the training system, there are several enablers such as Training Development, policies, design and methods. Each of these enablers play an important role as part of the training system in shaping a positive learning environment for our soldiers. As the Army continues to improve on our capabilities, there is a need to constantly review our training system to integrate such capabilities into the various units. Therefore, I would want to be part of the effort to effect these changes and assist the Army in developing a strong and effective training system in the future.
Master's in Instructional Systems encapsulates systems thinking in the design of instruction and instructional systems. This will greatly aid me in contextualizing the latest training and learning pedagogies, methodologies and technologies in strengthening man-machine integration as part of the training syllabus in the Army. In addition, attaining a Foundation in Educational Psychology will enable me to comprehend the psyche of our soldiers. This will equip me in designing curriculums and trainings that fully engage the soldiers at the cognitive and emotive level. Knowing what engages our soldiers cognitively will spur them to want to learn faster and learn more. By gaining insights into the field of Human Performance Technology (HPT), I can contribute by exploring and developing other avenues to improve workplace performance which could not be sufficiently yielded by training alone. This Master's Program will offer me a good opportunity to gain a better understanding and specialization in the areas of design, development, evaluation and research, implementation and management of training to support the Army training requirements.
I firmly believe that the way we train and engage our soldiers will make a significant difference and a huge impact to the lives of our soldiers. I am very passionate when it comes to my soldiers' training and I believe that I will be able to harness this passion by carefully developing training and learning systems, strategies and policies that are sustainable, engaging and able to meet the evolving demographic and demand of our soldiers. I feel that I can greatly contribute to the training community after acquiring the various competencies that the Instructional Systems Program will offer.
